the weekend warrior >> the masters

Monday, April 2nd, 2007

Hola crew,

I’m kicking off a weekly retrospective surf report called, The Weekend Warrior. I’m stuck in the 9-5 so on weekends I love to travel far and wide to look for good waves. As most of you know I’m pretty keen on my photography and have recently acquired some space on the information super highway at www.hughdavis.com.au.

The plan is this: after each weekend I’ll send out a handful of the cream photos from my weekend activities with a brief commentary. So if you’re into surfing, the beach, the outdoors or you just like to look at pretty pictures then say no more, I’ll do my best to keep the photos flowing. However, if you’re not keen on getting the weekly froth then please reply (hopefully with some constructive feedback) and I’ll unsubscribe you.

Please feel free to forward this email on to any of your friends or contacts you think may be interested. If they are interested in receiving The Weekend Warrior regularly then please get them to email me to subscribe.

This weekend the weekend warrior went down to Margs to check out the Margaret River Drug Aware Pro and snag some shots of the visiting pros. Saturday morning greeted ww with small onshore junk but the sun was shining so he jumped in the water with his rig and squeezed off a few frames of some Japanese and Aussie hot shots:

Saturday afternoon saw a who’s who of surf royalty, including young upstarts Dane Reynolds and Jordy Smith, take apart onshore Gas Point at the seams. Dane did a massive floating alleyoop (forward air 360, see below sequence) on his first wave and stuck it! The boys were blowin up!

The swell grew solidly over night, right in time for final day of the contest with solid, windy 8 footers the norm. “Margaret River has come alive for finals day!” and “she’s saved the best for last!” bellowed the commentators as surfers tackled the tricky conditions. Aussie surfer Jessi Miley-Dyer came second behind Brazilian Jacqueline Silva in the women’s final and Aussie Kieren Perrow reigned supreme in the men’s final, beating Portugal’s Tiago Pires with his big wave skills:
