Mid way through last week, surf forecasters around the world started talking up an 8m swell gunning for Margaret River. Even the Bureau of Meteorology was claiming it. This kind of forecast does not go unnoticed by our sports elite. Big wave hellman Ross Clarke-Jones, ex-world champ Tom Carroll, a host of local big wave lords and pro blowins mobilised for what was to be…”Sunday, 2 September, Day of Days”.

Some of the big wave crew hit up Cow Bombie on Saturday arvo and towed into some HUGE waves. Conditions were less than ideal though, with a strong SW wind getting into it. Everyone was biding their time for Sunday…

The swell never hit the 8m mark but it was still solid. Every big wave reef on the Leeuwin-Naturaliste coast came to life, with massive walls of long-period, ocean-born energy detonating on the reefs.

The tow-in guys were getting some sick ones at The Bombie, fading and arcing across huge mountains of water.

The tow-in surfing on display at The Bombie was unreal but some of the most spectacular surfing of the day was done by the paddle in crew. I really respect the paddle guys because if things go wrong, they don’t have someone waiting on a ski ready to pull them out of trouble. They have to be extremely fit both mentally and physically to even consider heading out in such challenging conditions. Hats off to the paddlers.

However, it wasn’t all gnarly reef breaks and big wave bravado. There were some perfect beach-break peaks on offer too…

A couple of weeks ago The Surfers Path magazine (a far reaching UK and US publication) approached me about including the ww on their website…and so a new partnership was forged! The ww will now also be appearing as a part of The Surfers Path website in their blog section. Check it out! www.surferspath.com

I have also updated my portfolio to include various content from my ww exploits over the past few months. Check it out at the Portfolio tab on my site.

Hope you had a good weekend. Some more waves on the way this week.

Gosh Weekend Warrior, you were lucky to get out of that one!!! Glad to hear that you (and the camera) are safe and sound :)

    F me.

That account was terrifying. I think a new name for the ww could be the Surfonaut.

Getting drowned by repeated monster waves is right up there with my fears along with the slightly less likely scenario of having my life-line cut off in space and hurtling through the solar system while my oxygen peters out.

    Go Surfonaut.
