Things picked up on the east side of Oz after a slow start to the trip last weekend. A 2-3ft south-east swell rolled into town at the start of the week and the wind went offshore for a few days, cleaning things up nicely.

Tweed Heads down to Ballina is a special stretch of coastline, steeped in surfing folklore. It’s a magnet for any swell activity and always seems to have good sandbanks somewhere…

Byron Bay falls bang in the middle of this stretch of coast and is a well known sanctuary for backpackers and surfers from the world over. The surf is full of Brazil Nuts, Euros, friendly locals and everything in between.

It’s a tourist hot spot, no doubt about it, but Byron really is a beautiful place. Its main back beach, Tallows, is the pick when there isn’t much swell and the wind has a bit of north in it. It’s a really fun wave which can get pretty epic.

The wind swung back into the south and the weather turned seedy towards the end of the week so we headed back to the Goldy. D-bah turned on and even the Superbank rolled out a couple for the frothing masses.
