West Oz has a wonderfully varied coast line, from the diverse reefs and beaches of the southwest to the long-walled perfection of the northwest and everything in between. Even surf starved Perth crew have a surfing wonderland 20 clicks out to sea: Rottnest Island.
It was a pretty obvious call for Rotto last Friday, NE winds and plenty of swell. Half of Perth seemed to pick it and wag work to make the crossing…must be the boom. A few of the boys in the lineup where on R&R from work up north, clearly well looked after by the mining and oil companies. One bloke shook his head with a smile and muttered “we’re an affluent bunch, aren’t we?”
The light was beautiful, perfect for shooting some underwater action.
These images render pretty nicely in black and white.
Rotto has plenty of surf options depending on tide, swell and wind. The spot we surfed was pumping: 3-4 feet with a wedging, tubing take-off reeling into a fun wall and another tube section.
It’s looking good for the weekend, with light offshores and plenty of swell on the horizon. Get amongst it!
